Pub Sing Lyrics
Each day at 5:15pm we gather in the Thirsty Parrot Pub to end the day on a high note - below are the lyrics to our favorite songs; we hope you'll raise up your voices in chorus with ours.
All For Me Grog
Chorus
Well it's all for me grog, me jolly, jolly grog
It's all gone for beer and tobacco
For I spent up all me tin on the lassies drinkin' gin
And across the western ocean I must wander
Away Rio
Oh, I'll sing you a song, a good song of the sea,
A-way, Rio!
I'll sing it with you if you'll sing it with me,
And we're bound for the Rio Grande.
Chorus
And it's a-way Rio! A-way Rio!
Sing fare thee well, my Liverpool loves
And we're bound for the Rio Grande.
We've a bully good ship and a bully good crew,
A-way, Rio!
A well-seasoned mate and a stout captain too,
And we're bound for the Rio Grande.
(Chorus)
We've a deep-water ship and a deep-water crew,
A-way, Rio!
You can stick to the coast but be damned if we do!
And we're bound for the Rio Grande.
(Chorus)
The chain's up and down now, the Bosun did say
A-way, Rio!
It's up to the hawspipe for the anchor's away,
And we're bound for the Rio Grande.
(Chorus)
Oh goodbye my darling and don't look so down,
A-way, Rio!
I've left you enough for to buy a silk gown.
And we're bound for the Rio Grande.
(Chorus)
So it's goodbye to Nancy and goodbye to Sue
A-way, Rio!
And you who are listening, it's goodbye to you.
And we're bound for the Rio Grande.
(Chorus)
Barrett's Privateers
Oh, the year was 1778
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
A letter of marque came from the king
To the scummiest vessel I've ever seen
Chorus
God damn them all, I was told
We'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's privateers
Oh, Elcid Barrett cried the town
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
For twenty brave men, all fishermen, who
Would make for him the Antelope's crew
(Chorus)
The Antelope sloop was a sickening sight
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
She'd a list to the port and her sails in rags
And the cook in the scuppers with the staggers and jags
(Chorus)
On the King's birthday, we put to sea
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
We were ninety-one days to Montego Bay
Pumping like madmen all the way
(Chorus)
On the ninety-sixth day, we sailed again
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
When a bloody great Yankee hove in sight
With our cracked four pounders, we made to fight
(Chorus)
The Yankee lay low down with gold
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
She was broad and fat and loose in the stays
But to catch her took the Antelope two whole days
(Chorus)
Then at length, we stood two cables away
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
Our cracked four pounders made an awful din
But with one fat ball, the Yank stove us in
(Chorus)
The Antelope shook and pitched on her side
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
Barrett was smashed like a bowl of eggs
And the main truck carried off both me legs
(Chorus)
So here I lay in my twenty-third year
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
It's been six years since we sailed away
And I just made Halifax yesterday
(Chorus)
The Dreadnaught
There's a saucy flash packet and a packet of fame
She sails from New York Dreadnought's her name.
All around the black rocks where the wild winds do blow
She's a Liverpool packet - oh lord let her go.
Chorus
Derry down, down, down derry down
Oh, the Dreadnought is lyin' in the river Mersey,
Waiting for the Independence to tow her to sea.
All around the black rocks where the wild winds do blow,
She's a Liverpool packet - oh lord let her go.
(Chrous)
Now the Dreadnought's a-howling down the wild Irish Sea,
Her passengers merry, their hearts full of glee
The sailors, like tigers, walk the decks to and fro,
She's a Liverpool packet - oh lord let her go.
(Chrous)
Oh, the Dreadnought's a-sailing the Atlantic so wide,
With the high rolling seas all along her black sides.
The sails tautly set for the Red Cross to show,
She's a Liverpool Packet - oh lord let her go!
(Chorus)
Now the Dreadnought is sailin' around Newfoundland,
Where the water's so green and the bottom is sand;
The fishes all sing as they swim to and fro,
She's a Liverpool Packet - oh lord let her go!
(Chorus)
Here's health to the Dreadnought and the whole of her crew;
To old Captain Samuels and his little dog too.
You can take your flash packets, Swallowtail and Black Ball,
But the Dreadnought's the ship that can out-sail them all.
(Chorus)
Drunken Sailor
What do you do with a drunken sailor
What do you do with a drunken sailor
What do you do with a drunken sailor
Earl-lye in the morning?
Chorus
Way hay up she rises
Way hay up she rises
Way hay up she rises
Earl-lye in the morning
Good Company
Let union be in all our hearts
Let all our hearts be joined as one
We'll end the day as we begun
We'll end it all in pleasure
Chorus
Right fallarallaralla to rah lei do
Right fallarallaralla to rah lei do
Right fallarallaralla to rah lei do
While we are together
Good company is what we're here for
Singing, dancing, drinking beer for
Naught that one could shed a tear for
While we are together
(Chorus)
Old King Henry in all his glory,
Told each wife a different story
Of all the things that we delight in
While we are together
(Chorus)
Grab the bottle as it passes
Do not fail to fill your glasses
Water drinkers are dull fellows
While we are together
(Chorus)
Health to the Company
Kind friends and companions, come join me in rhyme
Come lift up your voices in chorus with mine
Let us drink and be merry, all grief to refrain
For this company might never all meet here again
Chorus
So here's a health to the company and one to my lass
Let us drink and be merry all out of one glass
Let us drink and be merry, all grief to refrain
For this company might never all meet here again
Here's a health to the wee lass that I love so well
For style and for beauty, sure none can excel
There's a smile upon her countenance as she sits upon my knee
Sure there's no one on earth who's as happy as me
(Chorus)
Our ship lies at harbor, she's ready to dock
I wish her safe landing without any shock
If ever I should meet you by land or by sea
I will always remember your kindness to me
(Chorus)
Here's a health to the blacksmith who kindled my flame
And one to the chandler who lit it again
Come landlord and brewer pray generous be
For we're gathered together with dear company
(Chorus)
Old Dun Cow
Well there we were in the Old Dun Cow, we was playing a game of chance one night
When in walked Jones he was all a-quiver, and his face was a ghastly white.
"What's up," says Brown, "Have you seen a ghost, have you seen your dear old Aunt Mariah?"
"Me Aunt Mariah be buggered," he said, "The bleedin' pub's on fire!"
Chorus
And there was Brown he was upside down, he was lappin' up the whiskey on the floor
And "Booze, booze!" the firemen cried as they came a-knockin' on the door
Well don't let 'em in 'til it's all drunk up, somebody shouted "Macintyre!"
And we all got blue-blind paralytic drunk, when the Old Dun Cow caught fire.
"Well then," Brown says, "What a bit of luck. What a bit of luck," cries he,
"We'll all go down to the cellar me boys, and we'll have drunken spree"
So we all went down with good old Brown, and the booze you could not miss
And we had not been there very very long 'til we was all quite pissed
(Chorus)
Well then Brown went to the old port tub, started giving it a few hard knocks,
Started taking off his pantaloons, likewise his shoes and socks
Now, you wouldn't do that, you couldn't do that, you shouldn't do that there here
Don't you wash you trousers in the finest wine, when we've got light beer right here
(Chorus)
Well then there came through the old back door, the vicar of the local church
And when he saw our drunken way, he began to scream and curse
"You drunken sods, you heathen clods, you've taken to a drunken spree
You drunk up all the Benedictine brandy and you didn't save a drop for me!"
(Chorus)
Well then there came such a bloody great crash, half the bleeding roof gave way
And we were drowned up by the fireman's hose but we, we was gonna stay,
So we got some sacks and some old tin tacks, and we nailed ourselves inside
And we got to drinking the finest rum, 'til we all was bleary-eyed.
(Chorus)
Well later that night when the fire was out, we came up from the cellar bellow,
Our pub was burned, our booze was drunk, our heads were hanging low
And then Brown said, with a look quite queer, it seemed something raised his ire
"We've got to get down to Murphy's pub - it closes on the hour!"
(Chorus)
Old Maui
'Tis a damned tough life, full of toil and strife we whale-men undergo.
And we don't give a damn when the day is done how hard the winds did blow.
For we're homeward bound from the Arctic ground with a good ship taut and free,
And we don't give a damn when we drink our rum with the girls of Old Maui.
Chorus
Rolling down to old Maui, me boys,
Rolling down to old Maui.
We're homeward bound from the Arctic ground, rolling down to Old Maui.
Once more we sail with a northerly gale through the ice and sleet and rain.
Them coconut fronds in them tropic lands we soon shall see again.
Six hellish months we've passed away in the cold Kamchatka sea,
And now we're bound from the arctic ground, rolling down to Old Maui.
(Chorus)
Once more we sail with a favoring gale towards our island home.
Our mainmast sprung, our whaling done, and we ain't got far to roam.
Our stuns'l booms are carried away, what care we for that sound?
A living gale is after us, thank a god we're homeward bound.
(Chorus)
How soft the breeze through the island trees, now the ice is far astern,
Them native maids in them tropical glades are awaiting our return.
Even now their big brown eyes look out hoping some fine day to see
Our baggy sails running 'fore the gales, rolling down to old Maui.
(Chorus)
The Parting Glass
Of all the money that e'er I spent
I spent it in good company
And all the harm that e'er I've done
Alas it was to none but me
And all I've done
For want of wit
To memory now I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass
Goodnight and joy be with you all!
If I had enough money to spend
And leisure time to sit a while
There is a fair maid in the town
That sorely has my heart beguiled
Her rosy cheeks
and ruby lips
I own, she has my heart enthralled
So fill to me the parting glass
Goodnight and joy be with you all!
Of all the comrades that e'er I had
Are sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I kissed
They'd wish me one more day to stay
But since it falls,
Unto my lot
That I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and softly call
Goodnight and joy be with you all!
Goodnight and joy be with you all!
Roll the Old Chariot Along
Oh, we'd be alright if the wind was in our sails
Oh, we'd be alright if the wind was in our sails
Oh, we'd be alright if the wind was in our sails
And we'll all hang on behind
Chorus
And we'll roll the old chariot along
We'll roll the old chariot along
We'll roll the old chariot along
And we'll all hang on behind
Oh, we'd be alright if we make it round The Horn
We'd be alright if we make it round The Horn
We'd be alright if we make it round The Horn
And we'll all hang on behind
(Chorus)
Well a nice watch below wouldn't do us any harm
Well a nice watch below wouldn't do us any harm
Well a nice watch below wouldn't do us any harm
And we'll all hang on behind
(Chorus)
Well, a drop of Nelson's blood wouldn't do us any harm
Well, a drop of Nelson's blood wouldn't do us any harm
Well, a drop of Nelson's blood wouldn't do us any harm
And we'll all hang on behind
(Chorus)
Well, a night on the town wouldn't do us any harm
Well, a night on the town wouldn't do us any harm
Well, a night on the town wouldn't do us any harm
And we'll all hang on behind
(Chorus)
The Wellerman
There once was a ship that put to sea
The name of the ship was the Billy O' Tea
The winds blew up, her bow dipped down
Oh blow, my bully boys, blow (huh)
Chorus
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguing is done
We'll take our leave and go
She had not been two weeks from shore
When down on her a right whale bore
The captain called all hands and swore
He'd take that whale in tow (huh)
(Chorus)
Before the boat had hit the water
The whale's tail came up and caught her
All hands to the side, harpooned and fought her
As she dived down below (huh)
(Chorus)
No line was cut, no whale was freed
The captain's mind was not on greed
But he belonged to the Whaleman's creed
She took that ship in tow (huh)
(Chorus)
For forty days or even more
The line went slack then tight once more
All boats were lost, there were only four
But still that whale did go (huh)
(Chorus)
As far as I've heard, the fight's still on
The line's not cut, and the whale's not gone
The Wellerman makes his regular call
To encourage the captain, crew and all
(Chorus x2)
Wild Mountain Thyme
Oh, the summer time is coming,
And the trees are sweetly blooming
And the wild mountain thyme
Grows around the blooming heather.
Chorus
Will you go, lassie, go?
And we'll all go together
To pluck wild mountain thyme
All around the blooming heather
Will you go, lassie go?
I will build my love a bower
By yon pure crystal fountain
And on it I will pile
All the flowers of the mountain
(Chorus)
If my true love, she were gone,
I would surely find another
Where the wild mountain thyme
Grows around the blooming heather
(Chorus)
Oh, the summer time is coming
And the trees are sweetly blooming
And the wild mountain thyme
Grows around the blooming heather
(Chorus)
Wild Rover
I've played the wild rover for many a year
And I spent all my money on whiskey and beer
And now I'm returning with gold in great store
And I never will play the wild rover no more.
Chorus
And it's no, nay, never.
No nay never no more
Will I play the wild rover,
No never no more.
I went to an ale-house I used to frequent
And I told the landlady my money was spent
I asked her for credit, she answered me, "Nay
Such a custom as yours I can have any day."
(Chorus)
I took from my pocket ten sovereigns bright
And the landlady's eyes opened wide with delight
She said, "I have whiskey, and wines of the best,
And those words that I spoke sure were only in jest."
(Chorus)
I'll go home to my parents, confess what I've done,
And I'll ask them to pardon their prodigal son
And if they'll forgive me as oft times before,
Sure I never will play the wild rover no more.
(Chorus 2x)
